Our Cemetery Walking tour proceeds to where the earliest pioneers- judges, merchants, soldiers, laborers and their families-lie buried in Palestine Cemetery dubbed the “City of the Dead” in 1967. This is when the graves of those who made Palestine largely outnumbered our population’s living. The cemetery was reaching capacity!
This is the final resting place of U.S. Senator John H. Reagan, Governor Thomas Campbell, and Palestine Mayor George Anderson Wright. Numerous unknown confederate soldiers and infants sleep on the hillsides under majestic century old cedar trees. As you walk this cemetery haunted with history you’ll notice the distinction between wealth and poverty has been carried to their graves. *For Friday tours, please call for reservations.
